synonyms task, duty, job, and chore mean a piece of work that has to be done. task suggests work given to you by someone who has authority.
The boss used to give me all the hard tasks. duty stresses that someone is responsible for doing the work. The duty of the police is to protect the people. job may suggest that the work is necessary, hard, or important. We all have to do our jobs. chore suggests a small, ordinary piece of work that is done regularly. Taking out the garbage is a daily chore.
